Fayetteville, ARK- Houston we have a problem…
Today NOAA shared that the GOES-East (GOES-19) started experiencing an anomaly and is unable to transmit data. The time of restoration is unknown/TBD.
So why does this matter and why is it important? If this isn’t a temporary issue or a quick fix this could mean that the satellite in charge of covering the eastern U.S. and the tropics in the Atlantic Basin would be unable to provide critical satellite data…
The good news is there are a backup options in orbit in the event of satellite failure that could take over if needed. And there’s other weather satellites in space to help fill in the images. The problem in the meantime is we don’t know now how long the time would be to fix the problem on the GOES-East satellite depending on the issue. And backup options are not an instant switch-over. If a backup option were to take over, it could take roughly up to 2-3 weeks to re-position a backup satellite and get it fully operational.
We’ll keep an eye on it!
